Based on a novel by Rudolf Höß, the film tells the fictional story of Franz Lang, the notorious commander of the German concentration camp Auschwitz. Already while he was a soldier during the First World War, he ruthlessly carried out his orders to the letter. So too in civilian life, Lang belongs to those sort of people for whom orders from a superior are to be unquestioningly obeyed. Following the Nazi seizure of power, the military quickly recognize that Lang is a perfect instrument for them. Never questioning, he always obeys whatever orders are given him. And so he rises to chief commander of Auschwitz. This a concentration camp where millions of people, especially Jewish people, are murdered – Yet, for Lang the simple carrying out of orders raises no moral questions whatsoever.
