The action takes place in 1918, the scene is the Syrian front. Captain Schulz defends a fort with a small force against Arab desert tribes. He sends Lieutenant Cellar with others to Damascus, for provisions. On the way runs meets Vera Niemeyer, a young nurse, on the run from the Arabs. Keller takes her to Damascus and a romance between the two blossoms but Keller is forced to return to the front.
